SUMMARY:Siesta: Code of the month
DESCRIPTION:Register here\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe 12th code of the month public session will be on December 11th\, 2024 with a presentation by MaX CoE\, about “SIESTA: a DFT code for large-scale computational material science in HPC environments” \n\n\n\nPlease register using the link below.https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/2449943246926877273After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. \n\n\n\nSiesta and Computational Materials Science \n\n\n\nComputational materials science has experienced huge progress since the beginning of this century\, due to the combination of the steady increase of the computational power of the HPC centers\, and the advances in the theoretical approaches to solve the basic underlying quantum-mechanical equations. Current pre-exascale and near-future exascale HPC capabilities offer tremendous opportunities for scientific breakthroughs. They also create challenges in making computational codes able to use the potential of these infrastructures. \n\n\n\nIn this webinar\, we will give a general view of the background of how computational materials science meets these challenges. We begin by formulating the problem at its most basic level. Then place it within the context of modern HPC machines. \n\n\n\nThen\, we will describe SIESTA\, a code for atomistic materials science simulations\, which is specially designed for efficiency in dealing with systems with a very large number of atoms. I will describe our efforts to make SIESTA ready for the current and future HPC infrastructures\, and the prospects for future developments of the code and this scientific area in general. \n\n\n\nMore events\n\n\n\nCheck out more upcoming events from ENCCS and our European network at https://enccs.se/events.

SUMMARY:Python for Scientific Computing
DESCRIPTION:What does this Python course include?\n\n\n\nThis is a medium-advanced Python course focusing on tools such as NumPy\, SciPy\, Matplotlib\, and Pandas. It is suitable for people who know basic Python and want to know some internals and important libraries for science – basically\, how a typical scientist actually uses Python. Read the learner personas to see if the course is right for you.  Prerequisites include basic programming in Python. \n\n\n\nThis multilateral collaborative workshop is hosted by Aalto Scientific Computing (Aalto University\, Finland) in partnership with CodeRefinery. The lesson material can be found at https://scicomp.aalto.fi/training/scip/python-for-scicomp-2023/. \n\n\n\nPrerequisites\n\n\n\nIn order to follow this Python course you need some background: \n\n\n\n\nKnowing basic Python syntax. We assume that you can do some Python programming\, but not much more that that. We don’t cover standard Python programming.\n\n\n\nWatch or read the command line crash course if you aren’t familiar.\n\n\n\nYou should be able to use a text editor to edit files some.\n\n\n\nThe software installation (basically\, anaconda).\n\n\n\n\nRegistration \n\n\n\nThe workshop will be streamed on Twitch (https://twitch.tv/coderefinery) and to follow the workshop on your own you will not need to register. However\, you can sign up to get emails with practical information about the workshop at: https://scicomp.aalto.fi/training/scip/python-for-scicomp-2023/ \n\n\n\nFollow up\n\n\n\nThe ENCCS workshop on High Performance Data Analytics in Python\, which goes more in-depth on tools for high-performance and large-scale Python\, is a logical follow-up to this workshop. The training material is public and useful also for self-study. \n\n\n\nThe next HPDA-Python workshop will likely be held in late 2024 – sign up to the ENCCS newsletter or follow us on social media to receive information on when registration opens.

SUMMARY:CodeRefinery Online Workshop in Best Practices and Tools for Scientific Software Development
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nThis CodeRefinery online workshop will take place for 6 half-days in two instalments\, September 20-22 and September 27-29\, 2022. \nIn this course\, you will become familiar with tools and best practices for scientific software development. This course will not teach a programming language\, but we teach the tools you need to do programming well and avoid common inefficiency traps. The tools we teach are practically a requirement for any scientist that has to do their own programming. The main focus is on using Git for efficiently writing and maintaining research software. \nFormat\nThis is an informal and interactive event with type-along lessons\, live coding\, and exercises. Learners are divided into exercise teams for interactivity\, either in online meeting rooms or in-person in one of several locations (including Stockholm)– so register with a friend! If you feel a bit more confident in the material\, you can register as an exercise leader. \nWorkshop lectures will be streamed online\, but participation can either be online or onsite in a local in-person get-together: \n\nBoth online and onsite participants watch the main teaching via a livestream at https://twitch.tv/coderefinery.\nThere will be an in-person meetup located on KTH camps in Stockholm\, organised by SNIC and ENCCS\, for people in the Stockholm/Uppsala region (registration form). For other meetup locations see the main workshop page.\nYou can also register to attend a Zoom breakout room (limited places)\, and you will be placed in a small\, interactive breakout room with an exercise leader. Please only register for Zoom if you want to actively take part in the exercises. Registration via the main workshop page.\nIf you prefer to participate and work on exercises independently you can indicate that in the general registration form. You will still receive the link to an online document where you can ask questions during the workshop. Registration via the main workshop page.\nSee further information on how to join at https://coderefinery.github.io/2022-09-20-workshop/join/\n\nBefore signing up please also read this privacy note about the tools/services we use. \nSchedule\nFor an up-to-date schedule please visit the course’s page https://coderefinery.github.io/2022-09-20-workshop/. \nRegistration\nTo register for the in-person meet-up in Stockholm please follow this link: https://events.prace-ri.eu/event/1417/registrations/1051/ \nFor any other type of registration\, please see instructions on the central workshop page: https://coderefinery.github.io/2022-09-20-workshop/ \nContact\nFor questions relating to the in-person meetup in Stockholm: training@enccs.se \nFor any other workshop or registration-related questions: support@coderefinery.org
