Mappi 2.0: AI assisted math education

Mathematics: building on the shoulders of giants

Mathematics is a logical structure in constant evolution, where new ideas and methods build upon previous work. This is what Isaac Newton meant when he wrote the famous words, “If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants,” in a letter to Robert Hooke in 1675. The revolutionary discoveries Newton published over 350 years ago are now a long-established part of high school mathematics education. However, the pedagogical methods for teaching them continue to evolve, bringing us to MAPPI and AI assisted education.

EdTech pioneer Mappi enables interactive, personalized mathematics education

MAPPI has made significant progress thanks to EuroHPC supercomputer access through ENCCS. We provided MAPPI with a valuable opportunity. They utilized 14,000 GPU-hours on the Leonardo supercomputer. This allowed them to develop fine-tuned language models to create new and better study tools in mathematics.

New progress and results

Specifically, a first video generation model, a LLaMA model, was fine-tuned. The results now form the basis for the Mappi 2.0 model running in production on Mappi.ai. This model visualizes the complexity of mathematics, making it easier for students to understand difficult concepts. Incorporating fine-tuned models for education-specific applications is now an integral part of Mappi. This improves the website’s ability to provide interactive mathematics visualizations.

What makes Mappi different?

Mappi is a learning platform that focuses on students’ needs by using data and generative AI to create personalized learning experiences. The vision is to offer all high school students a personal AI math tutor. Instead of following the traditional “one-size-fits-all” model, Mappi’s AI model analyzes each student’s strengths and challenges to generate tailored exercises and guidance in real-time.

What’s next for Mappi?

The next step for Mappi is to continue developing fine-tuned models by working closely with users to understand how AI improves their studies and iterate based on feedback. For us at ENCCS, it’s thrilling to think that the support from EuroHPC JU and the Leonardo supercomputer has served as a modern giant’s shoulder, making it possible for MAPPI to discover tomorrow’s AI assisted mathematics education where every student can reach their full potential.
