About the course

This GENE and GENE-X training event offers an in-depth, hands-on introduction to GENE and GENE-X — two state-of-the-art Eulerian gyrokinetic plasma turbulence simulation codes. Both are widely used in the fusion research community.

GENE and GENE-X solve the five-dimensional (5D) gyrokinetic equations that govern microturbulence in magnetized plasmas. Although they share the same physics foundation, the two codes serve different modeling needs and follow distinct computational strategies.

GENE (Gyrokinetic Electromagnetic Numerical Experiment) uses field-aligned coordinates. This approach makes it ideal for high-resolution studies of plasma turbulence in both the core and edge regions. The code supports simulations at ion and electron gyroradius scales. It runs in both flux-tube and radial-annulus geometries. GENE performs efficiently in linear and nonlinear studies. It also offers advanced physics models and diagnostic tools.

GENE-X, an extension of GENE, provides a full-f framework for simulations that cross the separatrix into the scrape-off layer (SOL) and beyond. It employs a flux-coordinate independent (FCI) grid approach. This allows users to generate flexible meshes and handle complex magnetic geometries and boundary conditions effectively.

Both codes run efficiently on large-scale computing systems using CPU or GPU architectures. Their design lets researchers perform computationally demanding simulations relevant to present and future fusion devices such as ITER and DEMO.

This training targets plasma turbulence specialists as well as PhD and Master’s students. It suits participants who want to learn or improve their GENE and GENE-X simulation skills.
